Odoo version upgrades

Odoo Upgrade Services from Odoo 12 and Later to Odoo 19 or 20

GetOdooAi's Odoo upgrade services move your business to a supported version of Odoo without losing data or stopping work. We upgrade databases from Odoo 12 and later to Odoo 19 or Odoo 20 and rewrite custom modules for the new version. Every upgrade is tested on a copy of your data and checked figure by figure before we switch over.

Why now

Why now: Odoo 20 is out and Odoo 17 has left standard support

Odoo releases one major version a year and gives each one three years of standard support. With Odoo 20 released on 24 September 2026, the supported versions are Odoo 18, 19 and 20. If you run Odoo 17 or older, you no longer get Odoo's standard bug and security fixes, and third-party app developers are dropping those versions too. The further behind you fall, the more versions your custom code has to jump in a single upgrade.

Recommendation

Which Odoo version should you upgrade to?

Odoo 12–15

Unsupported for years

Upgrade to Odoo 19 now. Plan for custom modules to be largely rewritten.

Odoo 16–17

Standard support has ended

Upgrade to Odoo 19 now, or to Odoo 20 if you use only standard apps.

Odoo 18

Supported until about September 2027

Plan an upgrade to Odoo 20 in the first half of 2027, once it has had a few months of fixes.

Odoo 19

Supported until about September 2028

No rush. Upgrade when an Odoo 20 feature justifies it.

Why Odoo 19 rather than Odoo 20 for most upgrades today? Odoo 19 has had a year of fixes, and most App Store modules are already available for it. Odoo 20 is only days old. We'll recommend it when your setup is mostly standard, or once the apps you depend on have been ported.

How it works

Upgrading from Odoo 12, 14 or 16 to Odoo 19 or 20

Jumping several versions at once is common, and it's where most upgrades go wrong. The upgrade happens in two layers:

Layer 1 · converted by Odoo's upgrade service

Standard data

Odoo's upgrade service converts the standard parts of your database (customers, products, invoices, stock moves) to the new version. On older or unusual databases this step still needs checking and fixing.

Layer 2 · rewritten by our developers

Custom code

Your custom modules are not upgraded automatically. Every version changes some models, fields and methods, and Odoo rebuilt its web interface on the OWL framework between versions 14 and 17. Custom screens and widgets from Odoo 12 to 15 usually have to be rewritten rather than patched.

So an Odoo 12 to Odoo 19 upgrade is really a data upgrade plus a partial rebuild of your custom features. It's also a good moment to drop customisations that newer Odoo versions now do out of the box, so we check each one against standard features before rewriting it.

Scope

What our Odoo upgrade services cover

  • Odoo version upgrades

Database conversion to the target version, for Odoo Community and Enterprise, on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own servers.
  • Custom module migration

Python models, business logic, reports and JavaScript interface code rewritten to work with the new version's framework.
  • Third-party app replacement

Where an App Store module isn't available for your new version, we replace it with a standard Odoo feature, another app or a small custom module.
Process

Our 4-phase Odoo upgrade process

  1. 1
    Free

    Upgrade audit

We review your version, installed modules, custom code and data quality, and list every breaking change and app that needs replacing. You get a written plan and fixed price.
  2. 2

    Test upgrade on a copy

We upgrade a copy of your production database on a staging server and fix data and code issues there, away from live operations.
  3. 3

Custom module rewrite and user testing

Custom modules are rewritten and tested. Your key users then run their daily work on staging and sign off, and finance signs off the reconciliation figures.
  4. 4

    Weekend cutover

Friday evening we freeze the old system, upgrade the latest data, run the checks and switch over. Your team starts Monday on the new version, with us on standby.

How long does an Odoo upgrade take?

A version upgrade with a few custom modules usually takes 2–4 weeks. Heavily customised databases or multi-version jumps take 4–8 weeks.
